Learn How To Apply

At State Civil Service, our mission is to provide merit-based, innovative workforce solutions that help state government attract, develop, and retain a strong and diverse workforce for Louisiana.

To support that mission, we use a skills-based hiring process. This approach focuses on what you can do and how your experience applies to the job, not just job titles or employers.

  • Default sorting is alphabetical by job title, including both classified and unclassified job titles.
  • Classified job titles are subject to the provisions of the civil service rules. These positions:
    • must be filled in an open, competitive manner by a candidate who meets the statewide minimum qualifications.
    • must be paid in accordance with the rules and may only be disciplined after being provided due access.
    • are prohibited from participating in political activities.
  • Unclassified job titles are open to participate in political activities, but do not have the protection of due process and are considered "at will" employees.
  • You can filter jobs by various criteria such as location, department, category, and type (classified, unclassified, promotion).
  • The job title link includes position specific information such as pay range, minimum qualifications, examples of work, and agency contact information.
  • When ready to apply, click the green 'Apply' button at the top right corner of a position and fill in all sections. When complete, click the green 'Accept & Submit' button to submit the application.

  • Making Updates:
    • You must log in to your profile to make updates.
    • Updates made do not apply to previous applications already submitted, only to future applications.
    • Updates made outside of the profile do not remain. They only apply to the posting you submitted the updated application to.
  • Adding or updating education: Select a type of school
    • High school - high school diploma or GED information
    • College/University - Bachelor's or associates degrees
    • Graduate School - Master's degrees, Juris Doctorate, or Doctorate degrees
    • Professional - No degrees, for professional development ceritifications only
Name - name of the university, school or institution.
    • Major/Minor box- multiple majors should have multiple entries.
    • Units completed = semester hours - number of semester hours completed, not the number of semesters.
    • "Did you graduate?" - entering "no" will result in the degree not being credited.
    • Master's degree is only an option for the degree dropdown if you chose "Graduate School" in the "type of school" dropdown.
  • Adding or updating work experience:
    • SCS will not credit experience based on a job title entry alone.
    • Duties summary - SCS will not read resumes for duties, spell out acronyms, or credit accomplishments as job experience. Explain your duties, detailing the steps involved: for example, running a report - give detail and describe the process
    • If you are currently working in a job you listed, please select "present" as the end date in the month dropdown (it is after December).
  • Certificates and Licenses
    • Enter any license or certification you have, regardless of the job you are applying for.
    • SCS will not check for licenses not listed on the application. Example: if the job you are applying for requires experience as a licensed attorney, SCS will not credit experience on the application if no license and date of issue is listed.
  • Visit the link at the top of the jobs page for additional important applicant information.
